Cigarette ashes were blamed for a fire that caused major damage Wednesday to a home in the Arden-Arcade area, officials said.

Firefighters were called to a residence on Knollwood Avenue just before 1 a.m.

A woman living in the home said she dumped her ashtray in a trash can in the garage, authorities said. A few moments later, a fire started.

Officials said nobody was injured.
