River Booze Ban Headed to Governor's Desk
A proposed ban on alcohol for rafters using the American River during summer holidays is heading to the governor's desk, after the final state Assembly vote this morning.
The vote won't become official until later in the day, but with an initial tally of 60 to 10 in favor of the amendments, bill passage is assured, according to Assem. Dave Jones' office. Jones, a Sacramento Democrat, authored the bill.
The governor's office said Gov. Schwarzenegger has given no indication whether or not he plans to sign the bill into law. As urgency legislation, the governor's signature would put the ban into effect immediately. Jones and other supporters wanted the law in place in time for the upcoming July 4th holiday.
The bill would ban alcohol possession or use on non-motorized vessels, such as rafts or tubes, on the waters of the American River between Hazel Avenue and Watt Avenue. The ban would only be in effect on the summer holidays of Labor Day, Independence Day and Memorial Day.
