Schwarzenegger Signs Overdue State Budget
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed California's overdue $145 billion state budget on Friday after using his veto power to trim $700 million in spending.
The cuts temporarily eliminate the persistent budget deficits that the state has faced in recent years.
The bulk of those cuts came from health and human services, including $55 million to help the homeless and mentally ill, $12 million from adult protective services and another $18 million to protect seniors from abuse.
"These were cuts that were totally unnecessary; they fall hardest on ordinary Californians," said Assemblyman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento.
