A busy Carmichael thoroughfare was expected to be closed for several hours Thursday after an underground water main broke, caused a flood and led officials to shut down a nearby school.

The leak at Winding Way and Garfield Avenue was reported at about 3 a.m. and workers managed to stop the flow. But crews remained at the scene digging in an effort to find and fix the 10-inch line that ruptured.
