Budget talks at the state capitol have prompted threats of a strike at California State University.

The California Faculty Association which represents CSU faculty members says it's learned that state lawmakers are considering cutting the state budget by 1 percent. CSU Chancellor Charles Reed said it would mean a $28 million loss for the general fund for the university system.

"It would be devastating," Reed said. "We haven't recovered from $500 million in state funding cuts we endured since 2002."

"It will reduce the raise that we worked so hard to get," said CFA President Lillian Taiz.

Earlier this year, a strike was averted when members of the CFA agreed to a 4 percent raise. Taiz contends the financial loss could snatch 25 percent of the raises and anger CSU faculty enough that they could vote to go on strike when classes begin this fall.
