A gas station clerk was stabbed to death while trying to break up a fight late Monday afternoon in Elk Grove, according to police.

The stabbing occurred at the Shell station at the corner of West Taron Drive and Elk Grove Boulevard about 5:30 p.m. Elk Grove police say there was an altercation between two groups of people at the gas pumps. Pretty soon the altercation became physical.

Police say the victim came out of the store to break things up and was stabbed. Relatives have identified the victim as Joe Johnson, 29.

A total of eight people were involved in the fight. Police arrested one person and are questioning seven others.
