Sacramento City firefighters responding to a house fire got more than they bargained for Saturday night when they uncovered hundreds of marijuana plants in an elaborate indoor growing operation.

Crews arrived at the home at 7457 Whitmore Street in Sacramento just after 6 p.m. Saturday after neighbors reported seeing flames, Sacramento City Fire Capt. Jim Doucette said.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire and found nearly 300 marijuana plants inside in various stages of growth.

No one was at the home at the time of the fire. Doucette said investigators were looking into who owned the home.
