A pursuit with speeds topping 100 mph followed what started as a routine traffic stop in Elk Grove Monday morning.

Police officials said an officer stopped a car on suspicion of a traffic violation on Grant Line Road, east of Highway 99.

Authorities said the driver of the car was put into the back of the patrol car while the officer looked into his license and registration information.

In the meantime, one of the two passengers in the car that was stopped got into the driver's seat and took off, police said.

Officers gave chase on northbound Highway 99, and the pursuit came to an end when the driver tried to exit at Elk Grove Boulevard but failed to negotiate and turn, ending up in a field, police said.
