Wi-Fi coming to Elk Grove
Computer users can log onto the Web from parks, coffee shops and local businesses over a wide area of Elk Grove starting next fall under a wireless agreement backed by the City Council on Wednesday night.
In a 5-0 vote, the council authorized City Manager John Danielson to execute the agreement with Frontier Communications, granting the company access to about 650 street light poles.
Frontier plans to mount wireless routers on selected poles to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to the city's business and industrial corridor in an 11-square-mile portion of the 42-square-mile city.
"I think this is going to benefit a lot more people than we can ever imagine," said Councilwoman Sophia Scherman, noting that wireless connectivity will "help the economic development process."
Provided there are no delays, Frontier officials said, they hope to have the first phase of service up and running by this fall.
