Hi..my name is Kevin. I am 39 year old Sacramento resident of the area and was excited to see there is a Sacramento forum up and running... I also happen to be a sole proprietor in the area for some 20+ years...
How come there be no forum section for local homeowners interested in getting recommendations of local service companies like the MyFolsom Forum has?
No I am not promoting them and have nothing to do with that site but it sure
seems they got one over on this site by way of helping each other to make good choices on all sorts of things like landscaping, daycare, painting, etc...Not about to go violating this sites rules in spamming my business of course so no mention of what I would like to offer....just a question more related to building neighborhood togetherness and information sharing...
Anyone is welcome to email me answer...

~Kevin

Welcome to the site Smiley

Short Answer:
Yes, people can discuss businesses. No, spam is not allowed.

Long Answer:
I've run quite a few sites and several forums and the consensus is that nobody likes spam. If it looks like spam, sounds like spam and smells like spam, then you risk driving people away. Now, SacForums.com is different than the other forums I've run, so I'm open to considering this, as it does seem to work for MyFolsom.com. The last thing anyone wants is for “one post wonders” to come along, spam their business, and are never to be seen from again. It’s happened several times here so far, but I take it seriously and don’t allow it to infest the site.

Everyone is welcome here as long as they contribute to the betterment and well being of the site in one way or another. Now, I'm glad you brought this to my attention, but you have to understand that this is not MyFolsom.com and what may work for one site may not work for another. I am trying to understand this as well, as from my experience, allowing spam is a lose-lose-lose for everyone. It makes the site owner look bad, it makes the business look bad and it pisses off the members.

The rules about spam are also to keep things fair for paying site sponsors. Should a business think about advertising here, they are able to discuss and promote their business. What encourages them to be a sponsor if they can post their spam for free? To take it to the next level, what encourages people to join the site if a large percentage is blatant self promotion by businesses that don't care about anything but the chance to make a buck.

All that being said, people are definitely welcome to discuss businesses in and around Sacramento. I do not have a Business Discussion forum because of the reasons stated above. The rules are not open to debate, and having a forum like that welcomes that debate and wastes everyone's time.

Thanks again for deciding to join the Sacramento, CA Online Community and for taking the time to voice your concerns. They are valid and I obviously have something to think about. I hope you continue to post and contribute to the site. Smiley

Good example. Thanks Mo Smiley

SacForums differs from MyFolsom in that we have forums for the various towns and cities in and around the greater Sacramento area, including one for Folsom. If we had a specific forum just for local business discussion, people would have to wade through posts about businesses outside of their city to find anything relevant to them. I feel that it provides more value to have area specific forums where news and reviews can be shared. If the majority of members feel that they'd rather have local business discussion from Folsom to Rocklin to Davis all in one forum, then I'd be willing to accommodate. As it stands now, I don't see the need or the value in it for our members.

Wow, that was blatant! I don't know what the point of that was... that's not this site. It doesn't seem like you got a big response there anyway. Roll Eyes
