Joining a growing list of cities concerned with statewide drought predictions, Folsom city leaders asked residents Thursday to cut back on how much water they use.

The city wants to cut 10 percent off its water usage, Folsom water conservation manager Don Smith said.

"We're asking everyone to reduce water use and we're expanding our conservation programs to help them reach our goals," Smith said.

To reach their goal, Folsom extended the service hours of their Water Wise house call service, which analyzes a home's water use and provides customized water conservation plans. The program will now be available by appointment until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

City water waste patrols will also be expanded to issue more violation notices to residents spotted wasting water.

Smith said the miswatering of lawns and other landscaping is the largest culprit in water waste, according for about 60 percent of all residential water use. "Improper irrigation is Folsom's single biggest waste of water," said Smith. "The average household landscaping is over watered by at least 50 percent."

The city follows the lead of the Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Orangevale and San Juan water districts, who also asked customers to cut water use between five and 10 percent.
