Folsom Lake At Half-Capacity; Boats Forced Out

Quote
Officials are ordering the boats out of the water at Folsom Lake because of dangerously low water levels statewide.

Folsom Lake is currently at half-capacity, or about 40 feet below normal.

The Bureau of Reclamation is moving up the pullout date from July 13 to July 2. They want boats currently stored in slips taken out and stored on land.

"We're dealing with a dry year, and in a dry year, operationally, we still have obligations downstream," Louis Moore from the bureau said.

Boater Glen Wilson recently removed his sailboat from Brown's Ravine Marina because of the order.

"We've had a poor water year, we've had no rainfall. And the lake's dropping because farmers need water, so it's just reality. I don't like it but what can we do about it?" said Wilson.

A boater said he's disappointed because he paid $1,150 for slip parking and won't be able to get his money back.

Update:

Low Water Forces Boats Out Of Folsom Lake

Quote
Low water levels caused by drought conditions are forcing boaters to remove watercraft from slips at Folsom Lake Marina by today.

The move has disappointed many people just days before the Fourth of July holiday, a traditionally busy time on Folsom Lake.

The lake now sits at 413 feet elevation, one foot above the level where marina operators know to get boats out to avoid getting them stuck in the mud.

"It's very frustrating," said Ken Christensen, manager of the marina.

Many people were busy Tuesday removing sailboats and ski boats from the marina.

The lake is dropping a half foot or more each day as the Bureau of Reclamation releases water to meet the needs of users downstream.
