Mountain Bike Skills Course

Quote
Mountain bike aficionados can improve their skills at a unique Mountain Bike Skills Course at Cummings Family Park.  Volunteers recently constructed the first phase of the course and the second phase is due to open in late May.

More than 100 volunteers helped erect the course, which is one of only a few in Northern California.  The first phase includes all the elevated structures, including beginner, intermediate and advanced elevated trails and a 15-foot high wall ride. A jump course was constructed for use by riders of all skill levels.

“One of our volunteers was Folsom High School student Robert Cline, who constructed a 10-inch wide, 75-foot long elevated trail for his Senior Project,” said Jim Konopka, Senior Trails Planner for the City. “This is a very popular element of the skills course that will be used by many mountain bikers in the coming years.”

Funding for the project was provided through a grant from REI.  The course layout was a coordinated effort between the City of Folsom, the International Mountain Biking Association and several local mountain bike riders.

The second phase of the new course will include dirt jumps and a rhythm trail.  Volunteers interested in working on the course may call Konopka, 351-3516.

The Mountain Bike Skills Course is adjacent to the City’s Skate Park and BMX Course in Cummings Family Park, located at 1775 Creekside Dr.  There is a $2 fee to use the new course, which is open on Mondays from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., Fridays from 2 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 1 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.  Beginning June 2, summer hours will be 1 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.  Holiday hours (May 28, July 4 and Sept. 3) will be 1 to 8 p.m.  All users must wear bike helmets.  For additional information, call 817-2767.
