Possible Hate Crime Victim Dies

Quote
A Sacramento man beaten at Lake Natoma State Park last weekend in a case being investigated as a possible hate crime died from his injuries Thursday, Sacramento County Sheriff's officials confirmed.

Satendar Singh, 25, died as a result of injuries suffered during a beating while he picnicked with friends at the park last Sunday, Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Tim Curran said.

Singh, who was of East Indian descent, was with several others at the park when the group was accosted by a group of men speaking Russian, witnesses said.

Witnesses said the group of men made disparaging remarks about Hindus and their music, then threw a cup of beer into the face of one of Singh's friends. Singh stood up and asked why the men were confronting them when witnesses say one of the Russian-speaking men punched Singh. Singh fell, striking his head against the cement surrounding their picnic table.

Curran said the confrontation was possibly the result of several previous verbal arguments between groups of Russians and East Indians in the area Sunday.

Witnesses said they believe the attackers, all sporting shaved heads, no shirts and similar pants, were gang members. Investigators believe the attackers left in two vehicles: a four-door dark green sedan and a red Mitsubishi with a DMV number 7 in the rear window.

Sheriff's detectives are urging anyone with information about the case to please call (916) 874-5115.
