A soldier from Gold River has been killed in Iraq.

Sgt. Derek T. Roberts, 24, died along with two fellow soldiers on June 14 in Kirkuk, Iraq.

According to officials, an explosive device detonated near their vehicle.

The soldiers represented the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Infantry Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based out of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The Department of Defense confirmed the deaths on Wednesday.
