Sacramento Schools Get Big $ from Lawsuit Settlement

Quote
California school officials have announced that 488 low-performing schools are about to share $2.7 billion. The money is part of a settlement from a lawsuit State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell and the California Teachers Association filed against Gov. Schwarzenegger for failing to properly fund schools between 2004 and 2006.

The Sacramento City Unified School District will receive $45 million for 12 schools, including Hiram Johnson High School which will get $1.2 million.

Hiram Johnson is on a program improvement plan because of low test scores. "It's a challenge and it's frustrating sometimes," said science teacher Shana Just who's thrilled because some of the money will be used to reduce class sizes.

If the money is properly spent on the education than it would be a good thing. I do think however that because most schools get some sort of government assistance already that this is not the answer to the low test results.

In many places around the country the education level that is expected is just not there. I cannot believe that just because they are getting money to improve the system or school that the money will be used properly. We need to address all the issues involved with why these schools are performing so low and get rid of the administration that is not doing their job.
