Man Faces Charges Of DUI, Manslaughter After Fatal Wreck
A man faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol following a two-vehicle wreck Monday in Sacramento's South Land Park neighborhood that left four people dead, police said.
Robert Vellanoweth, 63, remained in jail on Tuesday.
Autopsies were planned Tuesday for two women, a teenage girl and a female toddler killed in the crash, which took place at about 3:49 p.m. along South Land Park Drive near Wymore Way.
The county coroner identified those killed as:
* Brizchelle Ta'Corra Rice, 21
* Shanice Patrice Carter, 18
* Brittanya Metchelle Nash, 17
* Kamall Dino Savant Osby, 19 months
Nash and Rice are sisters. Rice is the mother of Osby.
Police said when they arrived at the scene, they found that a brown 1984 Chrysler LeBaron and red 2005 Jeep Cherokee had been involved in a head-on collision.
The Chrysler had five occupants at the time of the collision. Four of the five passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth occupant, a 16-year-old girl, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Vellanoweth, the driver of the Jeep, was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
Investigators said the Chrysler was traveling northbound on South Land Park prior to the collision. The Jeep, which was traveling southbound on South Land Park, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the Chrysler head-on.
Authorities didn't know whether the occupants of the Chrysler were wearing seat belts. An appropriate child-restraint seat for the toddler was not in use at the time of the crash, police said.
