A man died in a high-speed car crash late Wednesday while attempting to escape from a confrontation that involved a hail of bullets, Sacramento County sheriff's officials said.

Authorities cordoned off an area around the crash scene near McClellan Drive and Poplar Boulevard.

Officials said the incident began when a man visited a friend's house not far from there.

Witnesses told investigators that two other men approached the man's red car. A short time later, shots were fired.

Deputies said the man sped away in the car, crashing it into a tree and suffering fatal injuries.

Investigators said they are still searching for the two men who confronted the man.
