Natomas Sees Spike In Home Invasions

Quote
A surge in home invasions and robberies in the Natomas area of Sacramento led police and local leaders to host a community meeting Monday evening aimed at crime prevention.

The area saw 15 home invasions and 14 robberies in June, police Sgt. Matt Young said.

Authorities released composite sketches of two men believed to have ties to the crimes. Police and the North Natomas Crime and Safety Leadership Team hosted the gathering in the theater of Inderkum High School.

"We are scared," resident Tanya Beever said. "With these crimes happening it makes us want to think twice about where we live."

In five of the home invasions, the suspects targeted women during the day in their garages as they were leaving or coming home.

"The garage doors were open, so the suspects went through the garage door and approached them androbbed them at gunpoint," Capt. Dan Hahn of the Sacramento Police Department said.

One home on Brynmar Court was targeted in a similar fashion.

"I know she threw her purse at him and then she herded her kids into the house," neighbor Veronica Garza said. "He took the purse and then he ran off."

Police said they think one of the men was involved in a robbery three days later on Turnstone Drive in south Natomas.

"I'm definitely going to be more vigilant getting in and out of my car and watch for things," nearby resident Kathy Standley said.

Hahn said residents should watch out for suspicious youths who may be hanging out in a neighborhood or are seen looking into cars or windows.

"It's important you get involved because police aren't the front line to crime, the community is," resident Yolanda Garcia added.

Police said crimes took place at the following addresses between June 1 and June 24:
