Teenage Boy Shot At North Highlands Apartment

Quote
A teenage boy was injured in a shooting at a North Highlands apartment late Monday, police said.

Authorities said the incident happened just before midnight at a complex on Oakhollow Drive.

Investigators said they believe the 15-year-old victim was visiting someone at the time of the shooting.

The boy was rushed to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in critical condition.

Deputies said they are questioning a group of people in connection with the shooting, but they do not yet have a description of the shooter.

Update:

14-Year-Old Shooting Suspect Pulled Trigger, Defense Attorney Admits

Quote
One of the youngest girls ever prosecuted as an adult in Sacramento County has been denied bail. During that hearing Thursday, new details emerged about the attempted murder case against former fugitive Wendy Mejia, 14.

Wearing the yellow shirt of the "honor" section in juvenile hall, Mejia came to court facing a charge of attempted murder, with an enhancement of using a handgun in the crime. And in court, while Mejia has yet to enter a formal plea, her attorney essentially admitted Mejia shot a 15-year-old boy in the head in a North Highlands apartment April 23.

"In fact there was not an attempt to kill in this case. The individuals in this case knew each other, were friends with each other," said defense attorney David Klemer. He told Judge Steve White the girl pulled the handgun trigger multiple times with nothing happening in "what has been described by witnesses as essentially active playing."

But when she pointed it at her friend's head, "the shot was fired," said Klemer.

The victim, identifed in court papers as Juan Carlos Lopez Ruiz, 15, is now expected to survive, but will reportedly suffer severe brain damage.
