A smoke detector helped save a dozen people from a two-alarm fire that gutted a house in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood early Thursday, fire officials said.

The blaze, which was reported at 1:16 a.m., charred a home near the intersection of 35th Street and 16th Avenue.
