Smaller Memorial Day Crowds Raft Down American River
Smaller crowds rafted down the American River between Sunrise Boulevard and Goethe Park in Sacramento County on Memorial Day. Park rangers speculated the ban of alcohol on the banks of the American River is behind the decline.
Memorial Day is traditionally one of the three busiest holidays for rafting down the American River. An alcohol ban went into effect a year ago that prohibits open containers on the banks of the American River.
Alcohol is still allowed on the river itself, but a proposed state law would also ban drinking on the river during the three summer holidays; Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
