FEMA: Pocket Area Now Has 100-Year Flood Protection
Sacramento city leaders are redrawing flood maps, which will mean residents in some areas will no longer have to buy federal flood insurance.
After $60 million in repairs to the levees in the city's Pocket area, the Federal Emergency Management Agency now says the area has 100-year flood protection.
"It gives me peace of mind, going to bed at night and not having to worry about those levees coming in," homeowner Dan Turner said.
The changes mean 26,000 property owners in Sacramento's south area will not be forced to carry flood insurance, but officials said it does not mean they drop their coverage entirely.
