Artest Pleads No Contest to Domestic Violence Charge
Sacramento Kings star Ron Artest has pleaded no contest to one charge of domestic violence as part of a plea deal in a Placer County courtroom. His sentence includes community service, work project and fines.
Artest walked into Placer County Superior Court Thursday afternoon with defense attorney Bill Portanova, and pleaded not guilty to one misdemeanor count of domestic violence. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped misdeamenor charges of battery, false imprisonment, and preventing a witness from reporting a crime.
The plea deal comes six weeks after Artest pleaded not guilty on March 22 to four misdemeanor charges stemming from a domestic dispute with his wife at his home earlier that month. At the time of his arrest, Placer County deputies originally charged him with two felonies. Prosecutors later reduced the severity but increased the number of charges: battery; corporal injury to a spouse; false imprisonment and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
