We have a Mini Dachshund that's almost 5mo. old... the Sacramento Dachshund Meetup group meets at the park on Howe & Cottage, but we haven't gone yet. I worry because he is so small and very hyper. I don't want to come off as someone who can't control their dog, but I want to socialize him...
1384  General Discussion / Off Topic / Gift Card Fraud Warning on: November 28, 2006, 01:27:25 PM
Well the crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift card balance.
If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is "activated", and then they go online and start shopping.
You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.
Please share this with all your family and friends...

News 10 Coasts For Kids Winter Coat Drive

Each year  News10, working with The Salvation Army, Swanson's Cleaners, and Gottschalks collects thousands of new and used winter coats.  The coats are sorted and cleaned by Swanson's Cleaners in the Sacramento area, and various other cleaners in the San Joaquin and Stanislaus area. After cleaning, the coats are distributed to needy families throughout the News10 viewing area.  Special emphasis is placed on making sure that every child has an adequate coat. Since the program's inception 15 years ago, more than 320,000 coats have been distributed, with 38,000 being given out last year alone

If you like indie films, check out the Crest Theater and you can find sidewalk cafes downtown... I think there are a bunch on J St. There's also a place that has great desserts w/ sidewalk seating, but I forgot what it's called. As for bike trails, there's the American River Parkway, but I don't know what's around Natomas.

Defense: The Pentagon Handoff

Quote
A White House spokesperson confirms that Gates will be sworn in as the new Defense secretary "in the new year," a good two weeks after his confirmation. According to the White House, Gates needs extra time to wind up affairs as president of Texas A&M University. But that's news in College Station, Texas, where Gates has been handing everything over to the man he calls "my strong right arm," the executive vice president and provost, David Pratt. Gates has publicly announced that he will quit A&M on "completion of the confirmation process and a Senate vote."

Rumsfeld okayed abuses says former U.S. general

Quote
MADRID (Reuters) - Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, the prison's former U.S. commander said in an interview on Saturday.

Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski told Spain's El Pais newspaper she had seen a letter apparently signed by Rumsfeld which allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation.

Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, said she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.

"The handwritten signature was above his printed name and in the same handwriting in the margin was written: "Make sure this is accomplished"," she told Saturday's El Pais.

1390  Sacramento, CA Discussion / National / Re: Investigations! on: November 28, 2006, 09:52:03 AM
Here's some more news about investigations... In January Rep. Henry Waxman becomes the chairman of the Government Reform Committee - he's already launched investigations against the White House and it's corporate allies regarding military contracts and medicare prices...

Quote
His targets have ranged from why the Taekwondo Union was allowing 12- and 13-year-olds to kick opponents in the head, to Medicare drug costs and baseball steroid use, to abuse of Iraqi prisoners at
Abu Ghraib and government contracts given to Vice President
Dick Cheney's former company, Halliburton.

After agitating by Waxman, the State Department had to revise a report claiming terrorism had decreased in 2003, to reflect that it actually had increased.

Waxman found overbilling on Katrina contracts and overbilling by Halliburton in
Iraq. He revealed that seniors wouldn't really save on premiums by switching to the government's Medicare drug plan. With Davis, he issued a report documenting extensive contacts between the White House and convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The Taekwondo Union agreed to prohibit head kicks by anyone under 14.

Sacramento Opens New Skate, Dog Park

Quote
Sacramento now has a new skate and dog park. It's at the Granite Regional Park on Ramona Avenue and Power Inn Road. The skate park will challenge skilled skaters but also train people who are less experienced.
