Sacramento, CA Discussion / Folsom / Re: Proposed Closure of Folsom Point Upsets Residents

I'm a little disappointed that it might close, but honestly I think the area needs all the flood protection it can get. I don't get the impression it's had real high attendance in general anyway. It's a nice area, though, I should probably make a trip out there before it's too late.
What does anyone else think?

What I read a while back, and don't quote me for sure on this, is that they are going to be adding 1/3 more parking than they are mall space, because parking is already somewhat of an issue. Things are looking good for them, though. A Tiffany's is supposed to be one of the major new tenants.
Sacramento just keeps getting bigger and bigger!

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Citrus Heights / Favorite path downtown?
|

I'm curious what route anyone else takes to get from the Northeast part of the county to midtown. I usually take 80 to Cap. City to 160, but I'm not opposed to sticking with Cap. City if traffic is light.
Coming back from midtown, I'll usually go the same way, but I like to change it up some. Sometimes I head down J Street until it turns into Fair Oaks and just take the long way, or I'll take 5 out to 80. When I was fixing computers for a client near P Street, this was particularly convenient.
Anyone have any interesting paths downtown?

That would be a weird chunk of county to designate a city. I still don't think it's really unique enough to justify being anything more than an area. Like I said before, I think it should just be annexed by the city of Sacramento. Adding it on the Citrus Heights would be nice though, too.
Maybe it could be its own burrough?

I would have loved a school like that when I was younger. My mother was constantly struggling with my elementary school (Citrus Heights Elementary on Auburn), to get them to give me work that was at my level.
Later on, when I was in high school and middle school, I think I thrived on the social and conformist nature of it, having everyone do the same thing. It gave everyone a common denominator, and made it that much easier to make friends.
This is interesting though. When I have kids I might take a look at this school.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Fair Oaks / Chickens in Fair Oaks Village
|
on: February 15, 2007, 09:42:39 PM

What does everyone here think about the chickens and roosters that like to hang out in old Fair Oaks? I guess Bob Walter had a quote from a reader that someone should "put the car on automatic drive and just plow through the Village.". I personally love the chickens, it's part of the Old Fair Oaks character! Clearing them all out would be like getting rid of the street performers on Fisherman's Wharf. Curious to see what anyone else thinks, and a link to the article is at the bottom. http://www.sacbee.com/224/story/122989.html

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Events / The Ohsees, Ski Instructors, Restaurant

The Ohsees, Ski Instructors, and Restaurant will be playing at the Fool's Foundation on Saturday, February 24th at 10pm.
If you've never been to Fool's Foundation, you're in for a treat. It's located at 1025 19th Street, Suite 0 (it's in a basement), in the building next door to the Old Spaghetti Factory. It is an art and music gallery, and frequently has awesome local independent bands, music screenings, and movie showings.
I'll be updating the calendar here regularly with shows and events that will be happening there. The cool venue itself is enough to justify the visit.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Orangevale / Re: Adult Store To Open Up Near Orangevale School

Does anyone know what ever came out of this story? I noticed it a while back when it was covered in the Neighbors section.
A petition of local residents is the perfect kind of solution, as far as I'm concerned. Rather then having stricter zoning codes, let the people that would be forced to have the store in their neighborhood make the decision.
Let's hear it for citizen activism!

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Sacramento Discussion / Re: Sac Co. forclosures up 400%

That is a terrible statistic, but just goes to show a few issues. First, how expensive housing is becoming in Sac as it's becoming its own Baby Bay Area almost. Secondly, it just shows irresponsibility, both on the part of the lender and the borrower. I think the state needs to look into some solutions to solve this issue, because it certainly won't go away if the cost of housing keeps on going up.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Midtown Sacramento / Anyone ever go to Pyramid? Lunch reccomendations for Downtown in general
|
on: February 14, 2007, 03:38:56 AM

Anyone here ever go to Pyramid? It's on what would be 10th and K, right next to the cathedral. Their food is so-so, but they have an AMAZING beer selection. I did a brief stint as a student assistant for the Department of Water Resources, and it was a popular place for me and some of my work buddies to go. They also had no problem serving me beer when I was underage (ssh! don't tell anyone).
Anyone else have any good lunch places downtown?

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Arden / Arcade / Re: Some Making Push For Arden-Arcade To Become City

I think it would be terrible if Arden-Arcade became a city. As a Citrus Heights resident, I'm all for places in Sacramento County becoming cities, but I don't think Arden-Arcade is a case like Elk Grove or Citrus Heights. For one, it really doesn't have its own identity, and its fairly difficult to discern where exactly it is in relation to Sacramento. I know county services can be kind of lame, but maybe they would be better served by annexing themselves onto the city of Sacramento rather than striking it out on their own?
Anyone else have any opinions on this?

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Professional / Kings possible move to Vegas??
|
on: February 14, 2007, 03:27:34 AM
|
|
So, in the arena negotiations, David Stern is hinting that the Kings might be heading to Vegas. He wasn't specific (he said "a" team) but he also wasn't exactly being sly about it either. I wonder what NBA owners also have a huge holding in Vegas? Hmm... In an article for Wednesday, Feb. 14th's Bee, though, the Maloofs are quoted as saying that it won't be the Kings in Vegas.
What do any of you guys think?
Personally, I'm all for seeing the Kings leave town. It's nice having a pro team and all, but things haven't been the same since Webber and Vlade and Peja all left. You don't get the level of community involvement you used to, and you certainly don't get the wins and excitement of, you know, having a good team.
