Sacramento, CA Discussion / Introductions / Intro by local business owner

Hi folks, I joined this forum back in summer but haven't had a chance to introduce myself til now. I own the Crepes N Gelato shop in the Sacramento Westfield Downtown mall. If you've been there, you've probably seen me making crepes. I have a weblog where I have info about my business, but primarily it's just a place for me to write about what's going on in life, the world, feel free to comment. Here's my weblog. www.crepeguy.comI'm also an independent real estate broker working with little overhead because I work out of my crepe shop, so if you want to save money, contact me because I pass on my savings to my customers, and that can mean thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, I've found that for many folks, the longer they stay in school is inversely proportional to the amount of common sense they have.
Well, unless you are the supervisor, there's not much you can do except avoid the office politics.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Downtown Sacramento / Re: Michael Moore Meets Lawmakers At Capitol

Michael Moore is a biased douchebag, and his films are sensationalistic all the while lacking any sense of objectivity.
Keep in mind I am far from a conservative. I would describe myself primarily as an economic centrist, a social leftist. However, Moore really does not even attempt to be objective, his material are all ideology driven and mere propaganda.
I agree that America's Healthcare system needs an overhaul and certainly is too corporate driven. In fact, there are a lot of things I agree with Michael Moore with. I just don't like how he paints the facts. Europe's social system is no godsend. Yes, it is generous, but so many of their citizens take advantage of it, needless to say, many of those countries are in extreme debt in order to maintain their social system, and probably wouldn't be able to continue it further in future generations as their populations are aging, declining and economies either stagnant or shrinking.

We should have a thread where we can talk about things to do in Sacramento such as new restaurants, nightlife, etc. where members can post their reviews of specific places.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Sacramento Area / Re: Help slow Sacramento sprawl

I think Sacramento's main focus on development should be the creation of a strong city core. This will work wonders in reinforcing Sacramento's identity, raising its civic profile, increasing civic pride and also raising Sacramento's stature amongst California cities.
It's finally happening now that there seems to be a lot of new life being ushered into the Midtown area. But the residential population in the core is still too low. There needs to be more residential areas in the Downtown and Midtown Areas. We definitely need to focus on rebuilding areas such as the K Street Pedestrian Mall, Alkali Flats, the Railyards, Oak Park and many others.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Arden / Arcade / Re: Some Making Push For Arden-Arcade To Become City
|
on: June 05, 2007, 01:36:16 AM

I think the main concern is mostly about tax allocation rather than preserving some form of community identity. Really, they should just focus on having more of Arden's taxes return to the community specifically than creating a new city out of nowhere. Come on, Arden Arcade sounds more like a run down teenage hangout than a bonafide city.
I am hoping Sacramento will soon eclipse other cities in California in population and subsequently status, so I don't want to see its population diluted at all.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Introductions / Re: Considering a move to Sac

Actually, the Sacramento City limits contain about 500,000 people. But the total population of the metropolitan area is about 2.1 million. And yes, geographically, Sacramento is huge. Driving from Rocklin to Elk Grove takes about 45 minutes easily, and that's without traffic. In the bay area, that's the distance between San Francisco and San Jose.
Thanks for the welcome. I hope we can get more people to contribute here.

I'm a San Francisco native that moved out here to Sactown 3.5 years ago, and I have to say that I don't regret a thing. Of course, San Francisco is a great world class city and Sacramento is a smaller city, it's like comparing apples to oranges. But believe it or not, Sacramento is actually considered a cheap place to live compared to SF. Also, living here, you get the advantages of living in a smaller city such as being able to find parking, knowing people around the community and less pretentious people, but you also get the advantages of living in a diverse metropolitan area such as places of culture, nightlife, nice restaurants, etc.
Of course everyone is subjective, for me, I like Sacramento for its history, diversity and its rapid growth and opportunities. As a new business owner, this is a great place to grow, and there are many opportunities opening up here. As a Chinese American, Sacramento's history is meaningful to me as our community has roots here since the mid-19th century. There are many great places to go for dancing, nightlife, there are nice clubs that can match the best you will find in the bay area. The restaurants are the same too, there are many great ones to choose from. When I compare Sacramento to the bay area, I would say that the choices are definitely less in Sacramento, but the quality of the best here are right up there with the best in the Bay Area, LA or anywhere else.
Hope this helps.
