Sacramento, CA Discussion / Sacramento Discussion / Re: Sacramento Bee Boycott Information

I've been viewing SacBee.com with an ad blocker on... I used another computer and boy could I tell a difference. SacBee is just an adwhore! There were ads popping up, covering content, and all over the place. There are far more ads than anything of "value" and I use that term loosely.
It's so obvious they're in trouble! Now they're cutting staff. Unfortunately, it won't be any of the editors.

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Sacramento Discussion / SacBee wants to dump 2% of its employees
|

The Sacramento Bee has offered voluntary buyouts to less than 2 percent of its work force. The buyouts were offered to employees Monday. Employees will have a few weeks to make a decision. Most of the affected employees are primarily in the newspaper's support areas, including finance and human resources, said Ed Canale, the paper's vice president for business development. In the editorial department, no reporters or editors are included in the mix, he said. The Sacramento Bee has about 1,400 employees, he said. The packages being offered to Bee employees include combinations of severance pay and extended company-paid health insurance. The Bee, like many other newspapers, faces competition from the Internet and other media. The paper's advertising revenue has been hurt as a result of the local downturn in the housing market. http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2008/03/10/daily23.html

Sacramento, CA Discussion / Sacramento Discussion / Open letter to the Sacramento Bee and Melanie Sill

I want Melanie Sill fired. How she ended up in Sacramento is beyond me! She had a history of yellow journalism and false reporting prior to her coming to Sacramento and joining the Sacramento Bee as the Editor and Vice President. The McClatchy Company must be desperate for anyone with a heartbeat and a little bit of experience under their belt. Unfortunately, her experience speaks mostly of her complete lack of ethics.
When she published the database of State of California employees' information, she displayed her true colors: various shades of yellow. Rather than admit that she made an error in judgment and issue an apology to state workers, she made more false claims that she later changed as they were disputed. Repeatedly, without apology. Does she think we're stupid? Does she think she's immune? Melanie Sill is nothing but a cockroach.
A decent person, a person with common sense and common courtesy, would have removed the names from the database and not required them for searches. The only use of that database is to snoop and stalk state workers. Her cowardice to do the right thing and blatant disregard for the plight of others is evident in the fact that she has not responded to emails. she has not acknowledged requests to remove or correct data. she doesn't care.
It's hard to believe that I am wasting so much energy on such a low, pathetic, excuse for a human being, but I am upset. I am also confused. How can she not see what she has done? How can she just sit there and think she's done the right thing when hundreds, if not thousands, of people are contacting her, canceling their subscriptions and fighting this fight. Most of all, why won't she comment on the people who are being tracked down and threatened as a direct result of your database?
Does she honestly think she's free from liability because she found a loop hole? Obviously she were never taught the difference between right and wrong. Nobody must have told her that just because she can do something doesn't mean that she should. I am happy to see that there will be legal action taken against the Sacramento Bee. However, it saddens me that Ms. Sill will probably not land on the chopping block. I just wish some permanent financial harm would befall her and the company.
Lastly, what she has done is just lazy. It is not journalism. She posted a database where somebody else provided the data, and a third party created the database and functionality. She simply typed up some nonsense to go with it and called it investigative journalism. It is not. The database does not tell a story or reach any conclusions. She expects people to do that for her because she is lazy, or stupid. Those options are not mutually exclusive either.
Good bye Sacramento Bee.
