Johnson Agreed to Pay Girl in Molestation Claim, According to Document Draft
Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson agreed to pay a girl who claimed he molested her $230,000, according to a draft of a confidential settlement obtained by the Sacramento Bee.
The Bee reports that according to the 1997 document, Johnson denied the girl's allegations were true but agreed to pay some money upfront and the rest in six-month installments which ended in June 2001. Some of the money was to be used for medical, therapy and legal costs.
Under the agreement, the girl and her mother were restricted from talking publicly about the case and that the signed copies of the contract would be locked in a safety deposit box, which could not be opened unless attorneys from both parties were present. Johnson was also barred from talking about the case.
The girl, who was 16 at the time of the alleged incident, claimed Johnson, who was 29 and playing for the Phoenix Suns, molested her. According to a "demand letter" the Bee obtained, the girl and her mother were seeking $750,000 in damages.
Phoenix police investigated the claim and prosecutors declined to file charges.
