Local son, former NBA basketball star and St. Hope Corporation founder Kevin Johnson announced his candidacy for Sacramento mayor Wednesday afternoon.

Word first leaked of 42-year-old Johnson's interest in the office six weeks ago.

In announcing his decision, Johnson said his inspiration was his grandfather who told him a person couldn't stay on the sidelines when there was something that needed to be done.

"After weeks of soul-searching, I’ve come to the unequivocal conclusion that I have to do this because we need change in this city, and we need it now," Johnson said. "I am here today to announce my candidacy for mayor of Sacramento because I believe I can lead this change, and together we can spark this change throughout the city."
