Sacramento Council To Vote On Wireless Internet Plan
Sacramento is once again on the verge of going wireless.
Tonight the City Council will vote on a plan to build a network to offer wireless Internet.
If approved, the move would give residents and visitors Internet coverage throughout the city.
Nearly 80 others cities around the country have developed similar service. Sacramento tried to offer similar coverage in the past, but efforts failed.
Sacramento officials said Sacramento Metro Connect is promising to offer coverage throughout all 100 square miles of the city.
"It sounds pretty cool," said Carlos Ponce, a user of wireless Internet.
Under the deal, the SMC would provide the service, while the city would provide poles and other structures for network equipment.
The free service will have a speed of 1 megabit per second, or about 20 times faster than dial-up service. Users would also have to endure occasional popup ads.
