Sacramento Mayoral Candidates Square Off In Televised Debate
Quote
Sacramento's two mayoral candidate traded jabs in an often intense, hour-and-a-half debate before students and faculty at California State University, Sacramento.
The tone became combative, with challenger Kevin Johnson attacking Mayor Heather Fargo on her record of fighting crime. "Under the Mayor's tenure, the last 7-years, violent crime has increased 55-percent," said Johnson.
Fargo responded by questioning Johnson's statistics, saying they are different from the ones she's received from the police chief. "In the last two years, crime has gone down in Sacramento. According to Mr. Johnson, it hasn't. I tend to go along with the police chief," she said.
Johnson repeated his theme that the city needs new leadership, saying, "Leadership doesn't make excuses, leadership finds a way to get things done."
In turn, Fargo questioned Johnson's leadership of his St. Hope organization. "$800,000 has disappeared and was misappropriated by you as the leader of that organization. Where did it go? It was supposed to go to children who needed it."
Johnson responded, saying, "You have a couple of things you're being investigated about as well, whether you're talking library or water meters. You have your own set of issues."
On gay marriage, Johnson said his position has been clear all along. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, but that (it) is not my position to impose that. I do not believe that anybody should be discriminated against." Fargo reiterated her support. "I think people who love each other should be able to get married, regardless of whether they're a same sex couple or not."
After the debate, CSUS students weighed in. Lindsay Keyes said she thought Johnson was short on specifics, adding, "The great example was Heather Fargo talking about the budget and where you're going to get the extra money for additional police and fire protection."
Some students felt it ended in a draw. "It's really hard to tell. But they both, to me, did a really excellent job," said Nakita Clark.
Government major Joaquin Castaneda said he felt Johnson had the upper hand throughout. "I wasn't decided going in," he said. "Now coming out I can definitely feel more confident in giving my vote to Kevin Johnson."

I saw it and wasn't terribly impressed by either candidate. Fargo looked like a slob and had her claws out, but didn't really provide anything of substance. KJ looked sharp and had a lot of ideas. Unfortunately, many of his ideas didn't seem practical or researched. Granted, I didn't watch the whole debate, so I could have missed some key moments that would have changed my opinion.

I think Fargo embarrassed herself horribly. She looked like an insecure bitter old lady. Her responses were mostly negative and always quick to put the blame elsewhere. Why doesn't she take some responsibility for making a mess out of Sacramento's economy? Her ideas are about as imaginative as a potato. She has made a mockery of this city for long enough. The time to change is now!

Does anyone else think Walt Gray's attire was entirely inappropriate? Johnson was the only one dressed to impress and I think he did. It's obvious he really cares about Sacramento and wants to help.

I think he commented about that this morning. As they were going to commercial & talking about Halloween costumes, he said something about not wearing jeans at a debate... he must have gotten the memo

I watched the Mayoral debates, but I was very distracted and had trouble focusing on what was being said. KCRA's Anchor Walt Gray and the other so called "moderators" had me freaked out. Walt showed up to a televised debate wearing a grubby t-shirt with some writing on it, and a lime green wrinkled sports coat. When have you ever seen a man wear a green sports coat outside of the Masters golf tournament? Never... then I started thinking, was this a subliminal message from Walt? Heather Fargo happened to be wearing a lime green frock of some sort...which made her look like a mean spirited cross between Kermit the Frog and Jabba the Hut. Now I've seen Walt dressed well for events, I know he has a wardrobe, why would he dress like a slob, as did the other two moderators. Well, I am a professional conspiracy theorist; I think they dressed like slobs because they had an agenda. These guy are professional TV personalities, ask yourself this, what would drive them all to dress like slobs? All of the students in the audience were dressed well; KJ was dressed impeccably as always, Fargo was wearing lime green and blue hair. Was the KCRA clan trying to come across as the average Joes in front of the college crowd, dressing how they though a college kid would dress, or was it a more sinister and diabolical subliminal statement about Kevin Johnson? Were they trying to contrast themselves with his always well dressed corporate/professional look, with the average guy or gal? Were they trying to state that “hey this guy is not one of us; he is one of those corporate banker types who doesn’t understand us.”

There was another debate...didn't watch it but just saw a news report on it. Fargo kept rolling her eyes at Johnson's comments. Not very professional. And she makes plenty of money...it would be nice if she would update her wardrobe. She represents Sacramento while she's jet setting around the world...please stop embarrassing us.
