State Puts Up Money to Fight Street Racing

Quote
Illegal street racers probably look forward to summer vacation. Police officers say many of the drivers are teens who have more idle time because they're out of school.

But this summer Sacramento area law enforcement agencies plan to crack down on young people involved in illegal street racing. And the state of California is helping out in a major way.

The California Office of Traffic Safety has announced it's handing out $4.4 million in grants toward street racing enforcement. Police agencies say they'll use the money to train officers how to detect illegally modified cars.

Last weekend, Citrus Heights police officers patrolled an area around Sunrise Mall, an area where street racers gather and drink. Officers handed out more than 80 tickets. They also arrested five suspects and towed away nine cars.

Too many teens are getting killed or killing others and it's great that they are doing this, but it seems like we hear the same news about funding and crack downs every year and it's not getting better.

because the majority of teen street racers arnt hardcore and they are the ones that are targeted and caught. what needs to be done is to get the bigger men, the ones that actually run the proper cards with the real equipment that organize it all. otherwise each new generation gets pulled in just like the last

From what I understand, and I'm far from being a street racing teen, most are meeting up at a stop light on say Sunrise Avenue and racing when the light turns green. All it takes is to hit a bump, patch of oil, get cut off, etc. for an unexperienced driver to lose control and possibly kill him/herself, passengers and/or innocent people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't think there are "bigger men" who are organizing most of what's being targeted.

Throwing money at it isnt going to solve anything.  Teens need more things to do, that is why they go race.   Sacramento should be paying to fix roads, not keep teens of them.  This is just another way for them to squeeze more tax payer dollars.
