I really do wish these protests would result in some action against the Bee, be it financial due to reduced readership, or some sort of legal measure to make such databases unlawful to publish. However, it seems like the Bee has completely gotten away with this one. There's no doubt they are smug and essentially giving state workers the finger. People forget quickly though, and at the moment it doesn't look like we've truly been heard.

Many state employees are very upset that the Sacramento Bee’s website includes a searchable database listing state employee salaries, job titles and agencies. We share our members’ concerns about privacy and that this information is so easy to obtain.

The information has been publicly available for many years; what’s changed is what the Bee has created as easily searchable database for this information on state employees.

Under current law, the state and Local 1000 have no power to prevent the Bee or any other news organization from publishing this information. Below you will find links to the following:

* Online petition to remove the searchable database from Sacramento Bee's website
* RSVP for the demonstration at the Bee to protect public employee privacy
* Support for legislation to protect public employee privacy issues
* Cancel your subscription to the Sacramento Bee

We suggest that members who are concerned about this new database take action above and contact Bee editor Melanie Sill at (916) 321-1002 or msill@sacbee.com, and Public Editor Armando Acuna at (916) 321-1250 or publiceditor@sacbee.com; Ms. Sill is the top editor at the Bee and Acuna handles their reader complaints.

I just saw this about a Rate-My-Cop site that law enforcement is furious about. They're going to try to get legislation passed to have the site taken down...

It looks like SacBee listened to some of our complaints. Unfortunately, all it did was make the database actually usable. There's a new news story on the front page and, obviously, this update was done to keep it there, in the public eye. You can now search by department and classification. It still lists names. It's still dangerous.

Yes, but at least now a name is not required for a search. It still bugs me that the names are listed, the thing that bugged me the most was that it originally required a name as part of the search to even access the database.

What bothers me most is the name being available, but more than that is that you don't need a first name. You can plug in a last name and it will give you everyone in the database that shares the last name. That way stalkers don't really have to know your legal first name to find you. They can look and the list and deduce which one is you.

My wife works in Corrections and inmates are around her during the day. Thanks to the Bee, our stress level went up that much more now that any inmate with internet access can connect name and location to her. If anything happens to her because of their irresponsible, misguided and BLATANTLY STUPID actions, I will make it my personal mission in life to make the Sacramento Bee go bankrupt and to make sure it quickly becomes a thing of the past.

UPDATE: I just found out that the protest is not at the address stated in the letter from SEIU, but has been changed to the corner of 21st and Q, where the SacBee building is located.

I want to point out to anyone who said that your personal information can be found at zabasearch.com - I just had all of my info blocked there. You CANNOT use zabasearch.com to find me!

Why the SacBee can't or won't do the same thing is pure BS.
