Woman Dies After Taking Part In Radio Station Contest

Quote
The Sacramento County coroner's office said a 28-year-old woman may have died of water intoxication after taking part in a radio station's water-drinking contest.

Assistant Sacramento County Coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence consistent with water intoxication in the death of Jennifer Strange.

Strange's mother found her daughter's body at her home Friday afternoon in the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova after Strange called her supervisor at her job to say she was heading home in terrible pain.

Strange took part in a contest Friday morning at radio station KDND 107.9 in which participants competed to see how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom.

Investigation Follows Fatal Radio Station Contest

Quote
Officials continue to investigate after a Rancho Cordova woman died Friday following a water-drinking contest at a Sacramento radio station.

The family of Jennifer Strange said she died after taking part in a competition at the office of KDND 107.9 The End in an attempt to win a Nintendo Wii video game system for her three children.

Assistant Sacramento County coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence consistent with water intoxication in the death.

Apparently 107.9 The End has taken their Morning Rave show off the air... The following is currently posted on their web site located at http://www.endonline.com

Quote
All of you are probably aware of the tragic death of a contestant, Jennifer Strange, following her participation in a contest on the Morning Rave last Friday.

First and foremost, our thoughts and sympathies go out to Jennifer's family and loved ones.

I also want to assure you that the circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible. In the interim, the Morning Rave is off the air indefinitely.

Thank you.

Radio station fires 10 in wake of contestant's death

Quote
Ten employees of The End (KDND, 107.9 FM) were fired Tuesday and the "Morning Rave" morning radio show has been cancelled in wake of a water-drinking contest Friday that left a Rancho Cordova woman ill hours before she died, apparently of water intoxication.

The show's disc jockeys - who go by the names Trish, Maney and Lukas - and morning personalities Carter and Fester would not be heard on the radio until the investigation ended, the station said. A spokesman said Tuesday that he could not reveal which 10 employees had been dismissed. However, the "Morning Rave" link on the station's Web site was missing Tuesday afternoon. The myspace.com social networking site for the station no longer listed morning DJs Trish, Lukas or Maney as its "friends."

This was a very sad thing that happened... i don't think it is fair that they canned trish, Lukas, and maney - it wasn't like there was full disclosure on what the contest constituted- i was listening that morning...

it was a stupid contest and while it is sad that the lady died and left behind her children she should not have done it...

i heard on 105.1 this morning during the Pat and Tom interview and i agree with it- which was how did this even come into fruition? I never knew there was such a thing as water poisoning but shouldn't whoever approves these things have looked into it?

i feel bad for the DJs as well

i will keep them all in my thoughts

uh... no. She was runner up.

I should also mention that a nurse called in (on the air) and warned them that it could result in death. Not too long ago, a Chico State student died the same way...

This has been all over the news! I thought I would find a discussion about it here......
The way I see it is that the contest was created by or at least okayed by upper management, cleared by attorneys, and waivers were signed. So, why did the DJs get canned??? to ward off a civil suit???
One news clip I saw aired the call from the nurse and the DJs just laughed it off saying something like, "that's why we had them sign waivers hehehe" That was pretty careless and cold hearted!
