Committee To Look At Dropping Goethe School Name

Quote
An advisory committee will be formed to look at changing the name of Charles M. Goethe Junior High School in south Sacramento, the Sacramento City Unified School District board decided Thursday night.

School staffers and the public have complained about the name, which honors a man who was openly racist.

Goethe was an ardent supporter of eugenics, which advocates the selective breeding of humans and the sterilization of many non-whites.

Why did they ever name a school (and park, right?) after someone like that in the first place? I looked him up on Wikipedia and found this

Göethe also recommended compulsory sterilization of the 'socially unfit', opposed immigration, and praised German scientists who used a comprehensive sterilization program to 'purify' the Aryan race before the outbreak of World War II. Göethe also funded anti-Asian campaigns, praised the Nazis before and after World War II, and practiced discrimination in his business dealings, refusing to sell real estate to Mexicans and Asians.
