Goethe Middle School Renamed for Civil Rights Pioneer
Sacramento's Goethe Middle School has officially been renamed as Rosa Parks Middle School.
The Sacramento City Unified School District school board voted on the name change Thursday night following allegations of racism leveled against the school's namesake Charles M. Goethe.
The vote was five in favor of the name Rosa Parks, with one abstention and one "no" vote.
Wanda Williams, administrative assistant at the school site for the past 17 years, was elated with the decision. "I am a child of the south. I grew up not being able to approach the soda fountain at the drug store because I wasn't white, " Williams said. "We are happy to be rid of Charles M. Goethe's ugly legacy on our beautiful school."
The name of the civil rights pioneer was one of three choices. The other options included local labor advocate Ruth Holbrook and landmark Japanese-American litigant Mitsui Endo. All had strong ties to Sacramento's minority communities.
