The largest Wal-Mart Supercenter in California opened for business Wednesday in West Sacramento.

The 237,000-square-foot store, which combines a Wal-Mart with a grocery store, is expected to add to an already fierce fight among local grocery retailers.

Wal-Mart, which relies largely on nonunion labor, also opened a similar supercenter Wednesday near Fresno.

The West Sacramento store, located on Riverpoint Court not far from the Ikea store, brings more than 650 jobs to the city. Officials said they received nearly 2,400 job applications for the positions.
