West Sacramento residents have approved paying for a share of nearly $400 million in levee upgrades.

The West Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency announced Monday afternoon that 70 percent of those who returned mail ballots are willing to pay a property parcel assessment to raise about $42 million toward raising flood proection to a 200-year level.

The $42 million is about one-half the local match of state and federal funds for the project.
